Lyla recalls another time when she went to her parent's home on her birthday. It was around Christmas time, the tree was decorated, with gifts wrapped and placed under the tree. She had opened her birthday gifts and they were on the dining table. Then she went to dinner with her parents and her two younger brothers. Upon returning home, her father noticed a male kid down the street just hanging around. After entering the home, they realized all the Christmas and birthday gifts had been taken. Her Dad, a Los Angeles Police Department Homicide Detective, was licensed to carry a gun. He pulled the gun and went running down the street. "It was the first time I actually saw Dad pull a gun" Lyla remembers.
As it turned out, the young male down the street was waiting for his accomplice who was in the process of robbing another house. Her father, Lyle, was able to recover their stolen gifts and the two thieves were arrested.
John also has experienced having a home broken into. He was formerly a General Contractor in Houston, Texas with 123 employees. One weekend, he was planning a short trip. He told no one except his foreman. When he returned, his home had been broken into and several items of value stolen. Police investigation proved it was his foreman. Immediately after, John had a security and surveillance system installed.
